L'Alcova:
high vaults,
private space.
The former master bedroom — the largest and most isolated. A built-in niche houses a single bed. The cross vaults rise high, and the original cement tiles tell their own story.
The alcova suite at our trullo in Puglia, the master bedroom of Trulli d'Amore. The original stone alcove now houses the king bed, beneath the exposed conical roof. En-suite bathroom, window onto the olive trees, and that morning light cutting through at an angle.
The name
L'Alcova: the alcova suite at our Puglia trullo
In L'Alcova there was a wardrobe. We removed it, and behind we found a built-in niche — a recessed space, deep enough to hold a small bed, high enough to feel like a room within a room.
That is what an "alcova" is: a small, private space where one retreats from the rest of the world. In historic Mediterranean architecture, the alcova was a sacred space — for rest, for care, for recovery.
We left the niche exactly as we found it, and placed a single bed inside. Perfect for a child, or for a guest who wants to read late without disturbing. During the day, it works as an intimate small sofa.
The space
High vaults,
original cement tiles.
This was the master's bedroom. You can see it from the volume: the lamia ceiling with cross vaults rises high, the space breathes, the light arrives from three different directions during the day.
On the floor, a portion of the original monochrome cement tiles. They were laid according to a technique called "pasta e ceci" ("pasta and chickpeas"): mixed pieces of two different designs, arranged seemingly at random. Half of that design is here. The other half is in the Le Cementine room, on the other side of the house. We separated them, but we wanted them to stay in dialogue.
The view is over the walnut tree garden — an ancient tree from which the fruit is harvested in September. The room does not adjoin any other: it is the most isolated corner of the house, the one where you will truly sleep.
The en-suite bathroom has a walk-in shower, a window onto the garden, and black fittings that play against the geometry of the wall tiles. Natural light from the window falls on the shower: you will wash with the same light that the farmers of this land used a century ago.

Who it's for
For the couple
who brings a child.
L'Alcova is the room that works best for families with one child or a third guest. The single bed in the niche is ideal for a child aged 4 and up — they have their own small den, separate from the double bed but in the same room.
It is also the right choice for those seeking space. Large, isolated from the other rooms, with high vaults: the sense of openness is completely different from that of a hotel room. You breathe more here.
Couples without children choose it for the quiet: the walnut garden, the isolation, the total silence in the morning. Three people in comfort mode — up to 3 without compromise.
