August is Puglia's most famous month. October is its best. Few people know this yet — which is exactly why it's better.
October light — the different one
In August, Puglian light is white, vertical, relentless. In October it becomes horizontal, golden, oblique. Morning and afternoon hours have a quality photographers call golden hour — and here it lasts not one hour but four. The white villages of Valle d'Itria take on an amber colour in this light that doesn't exist in summer.
The olive harvest
Olive harvest in Puglia typically begins between late September and early October. Valle d'Itria's main variety is Cima di Bitonto — an indigenous Puglian cultivar producing a fruity, slightly bitter and peppery oil. Harvest is done by hand or with mechanical combs. The harvest pace is incompatible with urgency — it imposes its own speed.
The olive harvest is not a tourist attraction. It is work. But witnessing it, even as a spectator, changes the way you look at an olive tree and the oil in your plate.
The oil mill — a sensory experience
Olives reach the mill within hours of harvest. Every hour of waiting reduces oil quality. Valle d'Itria oil mills run day and night throughout October. The freshly extracted oil — cloudy, pungent, with a grassy flavour that disappears in the following weeks — is traditionally eaten on toasted bread. Antonella can organise a visit on request.
October beaches
The Adriatic in October is still warm: 20–23°C, swimmable without issue until mid-October. Capitolo beaches — 10 minutes from Trulli d'Amore — are nearly empty. The quality of October swimming is difficult to describe to those who haven't experienced it: silence, oblique light, water holding all summer's accumulated warmth.
The villages in October
In October the villages of Valle d'Itria return to being villages. Not tourist destinations — places where people live. Seasonal boutiques close, local bars reopen for residents, restaurant prices drop. Alberobello can be visited comfortably even at noon.
Practical advice
Trulli d'Amore is open until end of October. October prices are typically 20–30% lower than July and August. Flights are cheaper, properties have more availability, restaurants have fewer queues. Temperatures: days 18–26°C, evenings cooler 12–16°C.
Trulli d'Amore in October: olive harvest, empty beaches, authentic villages. Last autumn dates book up sooner than you'd expect.
